On the northwest is the narrow Lake Erie Plain, which rises in a series of steps from the lakeshore to the high escarpment of the Appalachian Plateau. In March 1681 Charles II of England signed a charter giving any unoccupied regions to William Penn in payment of a debt owed by the king to Penn’s father, Adm. Sir William Penn. The Treaty of Breda between England, France, and the Netherlands confirmed the English conquest on July 21, 1667,2829 although there were temporary reversions. For many Pennsylvanians, the period following these conflicts marked growing dissatisfaction with British rule. Pennsylvania’s Early Colonial History
Pennsylvania is almost totally covered by mountains and a series of rolling hills, plateaus, and ridges punctuated by valleys. Forests cover about 50% of the state’s land area, and the only lowlands (Atlantic Coastal Plains) are in the extreme southeastern corner of the state. Inland from the Blue Ridge is one of the country’s most distinctive topographic regions, the Ridge and Valley Province. It consists of long, narrow valleys and parallel ridges aligned over a long distance. As seen from space, it appears as if an enormous rake had been dragged along the backbone of the Appalachians from northeast to southwest. None of the ridges rises above the valley floor more than 1,000 feet (300 meters), and nowhere does the elevation reach 3,000 feet (900 meters).
